St. Mary's Football Team
When St. Mary's Youth Club beat Wolves 8-4 to win the league! Eight goals to four is a pretty remarkable scoreline in any game of football, particularly when the losing opponents have four schoolboy internationals in their team. This was how a game between St. Mary's Youth Club and a highly talented Wolves junior side ended in 1953.
"We were 4-0 down at half time, but won 8-4 and that result won us the Walsall Minor League", recalls Jim Moran.
Jim has kindly supplied the picture and a few associated memories. He played for St. Mary's, an all-Catholic side playing in green and white hooped shirts, similar to Celtic FC.
"The first year we entered the league, we won the Buller Cup, played for on the Fellows Park ground (Walsall FC). The next year we won the league, the first Wednesbury side to do so", writes Jim.
"The Parish curate at the time was Father Stonier, who bought us the strip. our coach was George Archer - sadly no longer with us".
"Several of our players had trials with big clubs, and David Cousins could have gone to Manchester United or Bolton. Sadly national Service broke us up".
